Press Release is the backbone of almost every publicity plan. News releases help achieve organizational objectives.

There are 5 basic types of news releases

  1. Announcements
  2. Spot announcements
  3. Reaction stories
  4. Bad news
  5. Local news

A news release has 6 basic components

1. Letterhead

2. Contacts

3. Headline

4. Dateline

5. Lead paragraph

6. Body of text

The lead is the most important part of any release. In one to three sentences you must have basic details for the reader to entice the reader to read the second paragraph.

A traditional news release is on letter-sized white paper measuring 8.5 by 11 inches. Do not use colored paper for a news release. Even thought one might think that a colored paper will make the news release stand out, it is the information that will do the standing out not the paper.

Here are some rules for writing a news release

-Do not throw the whole kitchen sink into a release.

– Look for creative ways to tie your announcement in to current news or trends.

– Make it clear how your announcement is relevant for the editors’ readers.

– Do not use generic words.

– Do not use lame quotes.

– Critique your writing by asking yourself, “who cares?” Why should readers be interested in this information?
